The historic town of Wentworth

Wentworth is only a few kilometres from our campsite, a very pleasant town, with plenty of history.

Firstly, for thousands of years the indigenous people have been meeting here corroborees and ceremonies.

Then it was one of the busiest ports during the paddles steamer era of the late 1800s.

And the great rivers of the Darling and Murray meet in Wentworth.

As both rivers have been in flood in recent months there is a large amount of water flowing down  both rivers.    Last year we followed the Darling River from Queensland, and it was almost over its banks then, due to the high rainfall in Queensland and northern NSW.    All the rivers and creeks in the north east of Australia flow into the Darling River which makes for a lot of water.    In times of drought the Darling River dries up completely.

I climbed up onto a platform to capture the two rivers meeting up.   Quite a remarkable sight.
The Murray River is fed by the melting snow from the mountains so at this point it contains clear water.
The Darling River on the other hand is a milky grey, made worse by the recent flooding.    There is a clear line between the two rivers in the photograph below.
I took a photograph of Piper and Walter standing on the banks of the river.   But I seemed to have left Walter out, Piper is just visible at the bottom of the photograph.   The recent flood water covered the banks and the water marks can be seen on the levy around the town.    The grass is just beginning to grow again.
After buying some groceries we decided to have a relaxing afternoon at the campsite.   The weather was glorious, with the temperature in the low 20s.

Tonight we we experienced a beautiful sunset.
It is so green here, and the campsite only has four caravans in it.   Unlike Broken Hill which was full up.   We tried to book another night at the Racecourse, and could not do so, as they had no vacancies.
I think the grey nomads, and the people completing laps of Australia are on the move and are heading to Queensland, for the winter.
We have decided to stay here for the next week and tour the countryside from here.   Sadly we did not stay in Menindee, where there are lakes, which are also full of water,   The road between there and Wentworth was too muddy for us, as we are still not familiar enough with the caravan to risk driving on the road.
