I am sitting in the van, looking out over the Rhine, watching the cargo boats and cruise boats go by. I am also watching the trains go by on the railway line on the opposite side of the river. It is so peaceful. We are in a campsite called Camping Loreley Stadt, on the outskirts of St Goarhausen. It is quite an expensive campsite, 24 Euros per night, plus electricity, considering that it is a bit run down, and not wonderful facilities. But then we are paying for the view, I suppose. And the free Wifi. So I must not complain.
And there is a marvellous view of a ruined castle.
Our van, all ready for the stay in St Goarhausen.
Travelling from Koblenz to St Goarhausen was truly beautiful, and not many tourists either. Our first stop was up on the Loreley. I think the story goes like this. The Loreley maidens sang songs, which sounded so sweet, that it enticed the boats onto the rocks below. The bend in the river here is very treacherous, and it was no wonder boats were wrecked.
Susanne, Brian and I looking relaxed as we listened out for the singing. But none was heard. Perhaps it was just as well, for the boats on the river.
Brian and Susanne are staying in this very charming hotel, with the railway line right behind them. I hope all is well. Opposite St Goarhausen is St Goar. Our coffee destination tomorrow morning. After we navigate the river, on a barge of course.
And here we are drinking the amber stuff again, except Susanne, who tried a half trocken white wine. Too fruity. So next time it will be trocken, a dry wine. Brian, Walter and I will get very fat if we have too much of the amber stuff.
And tomorrow, after a coffee break in St Goar, it will be off to the Moselle River. I hope we all sleep tonight. We have a railway line in front of us, and a railway line behind us. Brian and Susanne have church bells as well. At least the boats are silent.
