Bay Walk Bollards

In Geelong there are 100 bollards around Corio Bay.  They are the work of Australian artist Jan Mitchell who designed them, bought huge reclaimed wooden pier pylons, organised a sculptor to make the figures, which she then painted.  The figures stand at over two metres high and make an impressive sight.    Jan Mitchell paints small white rabbits at the foot of some of the figures.  We were fascinated by them.

The line up of The Bathing Beauties.   I look the odd one out, of course!    I knew I should have worn my best bathing suit.    Once bathing beauty competitions were a popular attraction, but are so political incorrect now.
Walter standing beside a group from the Town Baths Swimmers' Club.   Where is his bathing suit?
Early Geelong Footballer.   Once this area was used as a practice ground for footballers.
Mrs de Carteret, who was born in 1910, ran the 'La Cabine' tearoom for thirty years, posing with Rudolf and Walter.   Just what is Walter doing with his hand?
The Yacht Club Lady.    A regatta was held at Geelong in 1844 and the yacht club formed fifteen years later.
The Scallop Fishermen and Woman.    Once Corio Bay used to be abundant with shellfish but fishing has been disbanded because it is so damaging to other species of fish and to the seabed.
The Tram Conductress.    There used to be trams here.    This conductress is knitting a bootee and is not wearing a wedding ring;.     Unacceptable then.
The Volunteer Rifle Band.
Sailor and Woman.    Is the sailor propositioning the lady?
The Steam and Sail Captains.
Victoria Baths Swimmers.   They are not really lifesavers, the caps are just for artistic effect.
A lady at the Wool Museum.
Another lady at the Wool Museum, wearing clothing made of wool, I hope.
Joy Ark Sandwich Board Man.  The Joy Ark was a cinema in the era of silent films.
Pierrot.   This is a sad figure who has turned up for the fancy dress party on Valentine's Day at the Joy Ark.
Corio Bay, Geelong is worth visiting just to see all the bollards.    A very unique experience.
