Travelling to Invercargill

We arrived in Christchurch last Thursday without any hitches.   Jetstar turned out to be all right, even after changing our flight plans a few times during the past months.    It was also more relaxing to eat our own sandwiches, rather than a set meal.   And before we knew it, we had landed and were first off the plane, first through immigration and customs.    Even our bags were first off the plane.   We booked into the hotel half an hour after we landed.    Truly amazing.   First ever.

The temperature was 15 degrees.   A shock after the hot weather in Australia.

We went around to Muriel and Bill's house after dinner and had a pleasant evening catching up on all the news.   Their house was being repaired during the next two weeks, plenty of cracks to fill in.    But they feel lucky they have a house, and that their house is on solid ground, unlike all the poor people who live in the eastern suburbs of Christchurch.

No tremors or earthquakes while we were there!    However, Christchurch had experienced their 10,000th tremor the previous day.   So we quickly collected our car on Friday, and sped out of Christchurch, just in case the 10,001 tremor was on its way.

First stop, Geraldine.   A picturesque cafe set back from the corner, on the road to Fairlie.   The sun came out fleetingly, which made the garden even more attractive.    Coffee was good of course.
We drove past the Mt Cook lookout, but no sign of the mountain.   It was hidden in clouds.    So photo either.

Next stop was Omarama, for lunch.   Enormous sandwiches, as usual.   New Zealand eateries are not stingy with their fillings.    So with full stomachs we set off again.
We drove through the Lindis Pass, without snow of course.
And past Cromwell with its 'big sign', which should make the NZ book of 'big things'.  Very well maintained   as well.
After stopping in Frankton for another cup of coffee, we drove past the beautiful Remarkables beside Lake Wakatipu.
We finally arrived in Wallacetown.    The trip took 9 hours, through glorious countryside, and it hardly seemed to take any time at all.
