Granite Island

A walk on Granite Island, always pleasant if the sun is shining, and not too hot.   And yesterday the sun was shining, and a reasonable cool day too with just a small  breeze. Perfect weather for clambering over the tiny island.

We climbed aboard the horse drawn carriage, a little expensive, but a very pleasant slow ride across the bridge.

Looking back towards Victor Harbour.
And looking towards Granite Island.
The connecting bridge and railway line were built so that goods could be taken ashore from the ships that were anchored at the end of the island.
After coffee (for us) and ice creams for Jay and Jespa, we set off to climb the wooden stairs to the top of the island.   This is no longer the arduous climb it used to be, when you had to climb up steep stone steps.  Also the cliffs at the top are now all fenced off, with no danger of falling off.  And there is also no opportunity for clambering down rocks in search of fairy penguins.   Much better for the wildlife.

There are plenty of rocks at the top for children to clamber up, so all is not lost.   Jay and Jespa on top of one of the granite rocks.
Jespa looking satisfied with his perch.  Looks very comfortable.
Once it was possible to clamber down to the rocks below.
The clambering two, high up on this rock.    There is red lichen growing on this rock.
Jay and Jespa were not allowed to climb on top of this rock, and to be content with this sheltered spot
I am not sure if this is the umbrella rock.  The wind and rain certainly make some interesting shapes in the rocks.
A bronze model of the little penguins.   The real ones are now a protected species.
A new sign at the entrance of the island.
There were once wallabies on the island, and we used to take our children over there at dusk so that they could watch them feeding.   But apparently they have been taken off, as the island had no kangaroos on it originally.   There has also been a major replanting of original species of native shrubs and trees.

A very pleasant half an hour walk.
