Sturt and Murray Valley Highway

We woke to a bright sunny morning, not warm, but perfect for a day of driving.   We set off early for the McDonald's restaurant down the road, a bacon and egg McMuffin for Walter and a slice of fruit toast for me.   Washed down with lattes from McCafe.  Everything freshly cooked of course.

A very flash McDonald's.
And off we went, along the Sturt Highway in New South Wales, on a very straight road.
One of the road trains, very long.  They certainly make quite a statement on the narrow roads.  No need to pass them because they travel at the same speed as the cars.  100 kmh.
This part of the trip had plenty of mallee scrub growing on each side of the road.
When the mallee scrub was removed, they were sold to people like us, to burn in our open fires. Not good.
We drove through Robinvale, where we left the Sturt Highway, and drove along the Murray Valley Highway.   Whenever we drove to Brisbane we took the Sturt Highway to Balranald and then onto the Hay Plains, which in dry weather were dirt plains.   We always left Mildura at around 4 am in order to escape the worst of the heat, in our non airconditioned combi van with its tiny windows.

We stopped in Swan Hill for lunch at a very popular cafe, which had amazingly delicious hot food.   I ate a baked potato, hollowed out, mashed with bacon and peppers, and then put back in half of the skin and baked again.

Swan Hill must be a great place to retire to, as there was pensioners en masse there.
We continued along the Murray Valley Highway, passing a few lakes plus channels and small rivers.

Lake Bolga seemed to stretched forever into the distance on the flat landscape.
Luckily I checked the sign twice otherwise I would have written about Lake Bogan.  Some funny person added an 'n' to Boga.
We continued on our merry way, along the flat and straight road, through farm land, until we finally came to Echuca, our destination for two nights.
