Hindley Street

Hindley Street.  Named after a British parliamentarian and social reformist, Charles Hindley.    As a social reformist, Charles Hindley, would be dismayed about how a street named after him, has an active nightlife, is a bit shady, and is full of drunken revellers.

When we lived here, we would often drive down Hindley Street on the way home after dinner at a restaurant, just to see if there was anything happening, but there was never much of interest really, no doubt due to it being too early in the evening.

Hindley Street, has had a few facelifts, especially Leigh Street, which runs off Hindley Street, now with shady trees, and trendy little cafes.
Walter posing beside the statue of Roy (Mo) Rene, a comedian, born in Hindley Street in 1891.  He became famous for starting many Australian idioms, such as 'Strike me lucky', 'You beauty' and 'Don't come the Raw Prawn with me'.
The street has much history, as it was one of the first built in Adelaide, and was home to the first stone church and it housed the first city council meeting.   The first moving picture was shown in the Theatre Royal.

The building below was once a small store.
Hindley Street,  very quiet in the morning.
Polites.  A name, which appears on signs everywhere around Adelaide.   Con Polites, a very successful property tycoon, who died in 2001, would put his name on a building as soon as he bought it.  And I think he once owned fair bit of Hindley Street.
A beautiful building.  A pub, I think.  Also offering an Asian Massage. And not the type you may suddenly think of either. A normal massage on offer here. Well I think so anyway. Asian or Thai massage is very popular in Adelaide, and one massage shop stated that it was possible to claim the cost from one's medical benefits scheme. Or perhaps I am just naive.
Another beautiful building. A Thai massage on offer here.
Another pub, with graffitti on the side.   The lane beside the pub is the entrance to the carpark and Adelaide TAFE College, where Scott has started an IT course.  There is a very grubby public toilet on the edge of the lane. You have to be desperate to use this toilet.
And opposite the pub above is the outreach branch of the huge Edge Church in Reynella.   No doubt the outreach workers are kept very busy at night on this very vibrant street.

I still love walking along Hindley Street, so much to see even during the day.
