Renovations

Darren's renovated carport (new lounge/dining room) is taking shape.    The double insulation is in, and the wall board is on and now the plaster is being applied.   But unlike houses in the UK, here the plaster is only applied to where the plaster board joins the next piece of plaster board.    So much easier and cheaper.    The ends of each plaster board are indented slightly, tape is stuck on the joints and then a couple of layers of premixed spec filler is applied, then sanded down and hey presto the walls and ceilings are ready to be painted.   Why is it all so complicated and expensive in the UK, where there is an insistence on plastering the whole wall or ceiling, even when there is wall board underneath.   The only benefit is for the plasterers who have a ready market, as it is such a specialist job.

Robert applying the spec filler to the joints.  Robert is very adept at this job, having renovated his house in Adelaide.
Darren and Walter are the assistants.
The first layer of spec filler in place.
Yesterday we went around and scraped back the edges of the spec filler in readiness for the next and final layer.    That will be sanded.   A damp cloth over the spec filler reduced the amount of dust.
Of course you do have to make sure the wall board joins the next one on a joist.   But other than that it is so easy.   This information is too late now for your loft rooms, Steve and Emma.
