Victor Harbour

Yesterday dawned with not a great outlook for the day.  Dark clouds and a very hot wind.   But lots to see, we cannot let the weather deter us, so off Reece, Karen and I went in their lovely air conditioned Toyota hire car.

Victor Harbour is half an hour south of Aldinga Beach, but over some hills first.   The first one is the Willunga Hill, very steep, and I remember driving our old Ford Fairmont up it, with its dodgy radiator, which boiled even on the slightest incline.    We always had to stop half way up Willunga Hill in order to let the radiator cool down so that we could put more water in it.   And the outside temperature was always very hot too, and we had no air conditioning.   Those were the days.

Victor Harbour is a very popular destination these days, lots of smart holiday houses, and the hotels and shops look prosperous.    Poor Victor Harbour, had a few bad years, when it seemed that it was much better to spend your money going to Queensland, but attitudes have changed, and people realise they have a real gem right on their doorstep.

First stop in Victor Harbour, was for coffee of course.   Reece and Karen looking happy with their coffee, and yes it was good too.
 Camels???  Where are we?
We walked over to Granite Island, but there is a horse drawn carriage if you feel lazy.
As I was with two geologists I learnt about the make up of granite.    The dark splodge is called shale, and the white pieces are called basalt.    I liked the description of the formation of shale pieces.   It is a bit like the waxy bits in a lava lamp that got caught in the granite when it hardened.    I hope I listened correctly, Karen and Reece.    It was very interesting.    I had never taken much notice of granite previously.
Karen and Reece posing against the southern ocean.
And when we returned the camel train had moved off, with one brave passenger.   They are smelly creatures.
Finally we drove along the southern road to Goolwa, which is on the north western part of the Coorong. A large array of birds, all waiting for their lunch.
Then it was off to sample some wine at a winery.
