We are adapting to our camper van, thank goodness. Although we have hit our heads on the top of the doorway and bumped into a few things in the van, we are managing quite well on the whole. No arguments yet either! And the bed is very comfortable and roomy. We are rapidly getting used to not having hot water and bath room facilities on board. And I have not encountered too many crawlies on the way to the ablutions block. Not yet anyway.
Today we drove from Byron Bay, through Ballina and now we are in a camping ground in Yamba, which is situated on the mouth of the Clarence River. I forgot to mention yesterday, for those people not familiar with this part of the world, that we are travelling from the Gold Coast, Queensland, on the Pacific Highway, to Sydney. At the moment we are in the North East of New South Wales.
This morning after a strong cup of coffee, we walked on the beach. I paddled in the water, the build up to a proper swim tomorrow! The water was lovely and warm.
The surfers were out on the water, ready to catch a big wave. I think they were probably quite disappointed as there were very few decent waves, and a lot of spills. The beach behind me was perfect with white sand curving around the bay and beautiful blue water. I am wearing my new $5 hat, which is very fancy, with net covering the brim and a white bow at the back.
The Byron Bay lighthouse. Quite a famous landmark in the area.
A typical Australian colonial house with the the passage running through the centre of the house. It was the light keeper's house but now holds a souvenir shop and aboriginal exhibition..
Ballina, a pleasant little beach side town, but nothing much going on there and not many people visiting. Not trendy enough for the 'schoolies'.
But we still got caught in a traffic jam, due to a tanker losing its load at a roundabout.
Another big 'thing'. The Big Prawn! Sadly it is closed but a sign informed us that it has been sold, so hopefully business will resume again soon. I missed the Big Nut Castle (Ballina) and the Ginger Factory, (Sunshine Coast) which may have contained a Giant Bee. And probably other ones too. I really must stay more alert otherwise I will miss all the Big Things.
Sunset on the main street of Yamba. Very few cars.
Tomorrow we are going to explore the beaches, the river and other towns in this area. And go for a swim in the sea.
