Over the border

Tonight we sat by the edge of the pool with lovely refreshing drinks, and then jumped into the pool.    A busy day, visiting the land across the border.   And getting confused by the time difference.   NSW has daylight saving, but not Queensland, so we never knew just what time it was.    Time was important because we needed to get to the Rainbow Surf Life Saving Club before 2 p.m. Queensland time.  Otherwise no lunch!

Walter diving into the pool.    What a splash!
There are still sugar cane plantations around.
The main street in Murwillumbah, New South Wales.   A very picturesque country town, where time stands still, I think.
The Austral Cafe, where we had coffee and home made cakes.   They have retained the old Australian milk bar atmosphere.    No air conditioning though.   It was very hot.
The old toilets, left over from a 1950's development project.   Very clean too.
Finally, we stopped at the Rainbow Surf Life Saving Club in Queensland, with 15 minutes to spare before lunch finished.   Jackie and I ate delicious flat fish in beer batter, and chips of course.    Walter decided to be more traditional and ordered a hamburger, minus the beetroot and pineapple.  We had a lovely view over the bay.
Rainbow Bay Surf Life Saving Club.
Rainbow Bay is next to Coolangatta, which is at the bottom end of the Gold Coast.    This is the surf life saving lookout, number 1.    Not many people on the beach needing to be saved today.
This tree is commonly called the 'dick' tree.    I wonder why?
At the end of Rainbow Bay, amongst the rocks, is a tiny swimming pool, which was built Jack Evans in 1956.   First he built a little pool, then he built a shark enclosure and finally a dolphin pool.   This is all that is left of the ambitious project.
A frill necked lizard sunning itself on the concrete.
Duranbah Bay, popular with surfers but treacherous for the average swimmer.   Quite an undertow!
Altogether, an interesting day.   The weather is warming up considerably, I might add.
