We awoke today to glorious sunshine, again! Walter's cold has nearly disappeared so he feels much happier and can enjoy this lovely weather.
After going for a walk (for the exercise) we went out in the car for a tour of the main beach of Surfers Paradise and the southern part of Southport.
It was a relief to find, although there were more buildings, the area had not changed much in the last 22 years. I have also travelled to much denser seaside areas in the south of France and Spain (Nice, Costa's) so Surfers Paradise was very refreshing, with its abundance of space between buildings. The white sand is quite an attraction too. No gravel beaches here!
We spent some time at the Marina Mirage, a small port between Surfers and Southport. The view in the photos above and below looks across the port to Southport. There are not as many boats, especially the big flash ones here, as there are in the south of France. All very pleasant though. As it was Monday morning there were not many shoppers either. I could easily eat lunch on this promenade.
The design and colour of the clothes for sale in the shops were really exciting and very imaginative. It would appear that Australian designers take the ideas from the northern hemisphere and then adapt them for people here. This was quite unexpected as I have always found the design of clothes in Australia to be very muted and conservative. Perhaps it is just people on the Gold Coast are less conservative.
Lunch for us was not in a fancy restaurant but sandwiches while sitting on the edge of the water at the spit. They were delicious sandwiches too.
While we were there we saw two dolphins who put on a display for us. A couple were using a net to catch fish, while two pelicans watched closely in case there was a ready meal for them.
A view over the spit, towards Southport.
Then it was back to the supermarket to buy the ingredients for dinner, which I must attend to now.
